Health Protection Scotland
We aim to protect the Scottish public from being exposed to infectious and environmental hazards which damage their health. We continuously monitor these hazards and work with NHS Boards to limit any impact on health when such exposures cannot be avoided.
Every year we coordinate the delivery of seasonal flu vaccinations and other vaccines like the HPV cervical cancer vaccine for young women. We also provide advice and monitoring on important issues like hand hygiene and healthcare associated infections.
We are also involved in research and development into health protection priorities as well as providing expert advice on health protection issues to NHSScotland and the public.
We are organised into three specialist groups, including doctors, nurses, scientists and information staff:
- Healthcare Associated Infections and Infection Control
- Blood Borne Viruses and Sexually Transmitted Infections, Immunisation, and Respiratory and Vaccine Preventable Diseases
- Gastrointestinal and Zoonoses, Travel, and Environment and Health
