National Services Division
We commission and manage national screening programmes and specialist clinical services on behalf of NHSScotland. Working with NHS bodies across the UK, we ensure highly specialised treatments and screening programmes are available to the population of Scotland.
Our national programmes such as pregnancy, newborn and diabetic retinopathy screening, and for bowel, breast and cervical cancers mean conditions can be detected earlier, increasing chances of successful treatment.
For rare conditions, it is often impractical to provide services locally. We commission selected Boards to deliver these regionally or nationally, so patients can get treatment, centres of expertise can be developed, and public funds are used wisely.
The specialist services we commission are crucial to the diagnosis and treatment of rare conditions such as cystic fibrosis, congenital heart disease, spinal injuries and ophthalmic oncology. We also fund a number of specialised services in England on behalf of NHSScotland.
