Practitioner Services
More than just payments.
Paying GPs (General Practitioners), dentists, opticians and pharmacists accurately and on time for the treatment they provide to the public is our main job. Last year, we paid over £2 billion to GPs, community pharmacies, dentists and opticians, but we also do a lot more than that.
We also help patients find a GP or dentist or register for new pharmacy services. We register and update patient information on the Community Health Index (CHI) database so that GPs can give patients the best care.
Our work in the pharmacy field supports the introduction of things like the Pharmacy Minor Ailment Service, enabling eligible patients to receive advice and medication directly from their pharmacist rather than having to make a GP appointment.
We also act as the agent of the Scottish Dental Practice Board which oversees the work of NHS dentists in Scotland. We pay dentists, approve treatment plans, and oversee the quality of dental care and treatment on its behalf.
